05/21/2008 11:04 PM Alert
The meeting of the Young Conservatives was held May 20th at 7:00p.m. at Planet Sub on south National in Springfield. We moved quickly into new proceedings and discussion and the following is exerpted from our discussion:

Topic 1:THE SECOND AMENDMENT
-we need to be specific on our stance, most of us look at the second amendment and know what it means but when we talk about reasonable restrictions, when and what and where we can carry, what does that mean? It is different than what it used to be….when an average citizen was capable of owning what the military owned, but we have to be specific….it’s okay to have a shotgun, but what justifies us needing aks? I think it means what it means and if you have the financing to buy the gun you want, then you should buy it and find the right place to buy it…I think the restrictions we see are completely contradictory to what the constitution says.
When the second was written, the national gov’t was precluded from telling states what they could own. The second amendment never has been statewide, until lately….what is the defining of “arms”….1629 English common law, said that subjects of the law had the right to arm themselves from the state…the original 13 states said that free individuals had the right to keep and bear arms for the sake of the state and the colonies…..not for the hunting, but so that if the feds got out of line the citizens of the states could protect themselves and prevent a government overtake.
As Conservatives this is a good example of what we are facing. Some think of our amendment right as a regard to protecting ourselves, others think of providing for ourselves. If such a time arose like the founding of the Constitution where the government tries to remove our rights and suppress us, then we need to be able to succeed over our opponents. A group of armed citizens leaves the government to question the ratio of bloodshed to victory and power.
All the second amendment says is that the federal government will NOT take away your right to own and be armed. DOES THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAVE THE RIGHT TO IMPOSE ITS WILL ON US RELATIVE TO THE OWNERSHIP OF WEAPONS? Consider the consistency of your argument to the actions of yoru Conservativism. The focus is that the Federal government should have limited power. If we change our argument because of the Second Amendment, we lose. A well-educated liberal (ha) can ruin this argument.

Topic 2:EDUCATION
Government and Education is no mix. It is overly large, too many stipulations and regulations and everyone tries to get their hands in the cookie jar. I believe in private schools, Christian schools, the family interaction in schools, prayer time, everyone being a core unit as opposed to a widespread governmental organization. (Aaron Busey???? Former runner for 138th against Sara Lampe and ended up working for Jim Talent….not an official politician, etc)I don’t want to see the federal government financially involved in Education, but just to see that everyone is ‘getting a fair shake’, so that everyone gets their necessary supplies for learning, all the tools. The state mandates that as long as students appear in the classroom they get Federal funding, which spoils us in thinking that we can have what is ‘owed us’. We should love to learn, to embrace that freedom and to leave the rest up to our family to foster learning and to the children to glean from their education. I don’t want federal government and I think that the further away from education the government stays, the better.
Each state sets their curriculum standards, and that is a mandate of the state. With NCLB, we have conflict with funding and curriculum and problems. If we didn’t have to worry about NCLB, I would still teach what I know children need to learn. I don’t need the government on my back but someone on the parents’ backs and leave me to be able to do what I can and the parents to do what they should.
The benefits of you being able to choose what school you go to are at the heart of Conservative values. Even if my children weren’t in public schools, I don’t have a problem paying taxes for helping other children become educated, then it is also my future in their hands as the youth that will one day lead this Nation. We have to have a well-rounded citizenry with an education, and I understand the frustration of paying for what I’m not getting. The double-dipping is the problem, but that’s what we’re paying for.

Topic 3: OFFICIAL LANGUAGE
In Germany years ago, there were a myriad of languages, but then everyone had to speak German and everyone who did not was kicked out or put to death. When they did implement that, it brought a country together that had not been before. Language is very fundamental when it comes to performing, doing business and comeraderie. A common language is of great strength. If people speak a common language and are on the same page, there is cohesion and strength. Anthropologists would point to the key moment in the Prussian empire of a common language.
Anytime we tell the government to bring this over us as an issue, there are always UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES. This is an issue that has never been dealt with in the history of this Nation. For the same reasons, left –handed children once had to conform to the mass population. Just as people are born they way they are and we want to be the most powerful we can be.
THE LAW OF UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES IS SOMETHING WE MUST ALWAYS BE COGNISANT OF!!!
If we declared an official language as a Nation, there would be no unintended consequences, then you would come into this country knowing that you need to communicate in English, then you would know you are putting your life, and possibly another’s life, in danger. If we said that we speak English as a Nation, then the Edict, by saying ‘this is it’, then we are punished for it, do we put ourselves up for peril.
The free market will determine where dollars go in the marketplace as far as the language regulations. By saying that the Government needs to come in and tell us what to speak is contradictory to what we originally stated.
What if we are in the 49 percent, and what if everything is reprinted and we are thrown to the wolves having to learn a new way of life…..presupposing that those people have the same values and beliefs as we do. That is a misconception.
We have given the government the authority of our language, but once we give them that power, watch out. Once you give the Feds that power, we run the risk of one day not being in the majority and that being used against us.

May 30th, there is a summit in Branson titled "Defending the American Dream" and registration is $29 per person. I am going and have planned to carpool. You may register online at afpmo.org. I will be happy to make carpool arrangements and leave Springfield at approximately 12:15, so we would arrive around 1:00 p.m., per my work duties.
June 14th, there will be a Leadership Conference here in Springfield which will be helpful in activity with grassroots efforts like this one, as well as the how-tos of running for government office. More information will be posted on that in the coming week. Again, please contact me about any of this. I am working with others involved and in charge and will do everything in my power to get you the most accurate and complete information.

Thanks to all who attended and please bring a friend at our next meeting, to be announced!
