SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State senior pitcher Davis Schwab became the second Bear taken in the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Wednesday, as the Atlanta Braves picked the left-hander in the 37th round with the 1,117th overall pick.
Schwab turned in a strong senior campaign for the Bears, logging nine starts and 19 total mound appearances. The 6-4 lefty logged career-best totals for wins (3), innings pitched (60.0) and strikeouts (68), finishing the season with a 3-5 overall mark. The Overland Park, Kan., native rated among the Missouri Valley Conference’s top 10 hurlers in fewest hits allowed (fifth), opponent batting average (eighth), ERA (ninth) and strikeouts (10th) during league play, going 2-1 with a 3.21 ERA in MVC action.
For his MSU career, Schwab posted a 5-6 mound ledger in 33 total appearances over his two-year stint in Maroon and White.
Schwab joins MSU junior catcher Drew Millas (seventh round, Oakland) on the Bears’ list of 2019 draftees. Overall, the Bears have produced 144 players who have gone on to sign professional contracts over their 56 years as a varsity program, including 125 during Keith Guttin‘s 37-year tenure as head coach.
In addition to the two active Bears taken in the draft, MSU signees Chase Krogman (34th round, Chicago White Sox) and Mason Auer (39th round, Chicago Cubs) were also selected Wednesday. Drafted players have until July 15 to sign with their prospective clubs.
