SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Evangel University welcomed new students from around the world Friday, and today is their traditional community service day in partnership with Springfield-based Convoy of Hope.

Weller Elementary is the site of a free “block party,” with several hundred Evangel students serving the children and families of the Weller neighborhood.

The Convoy Community Event Team is providing groceries, haircuts, a kid zone (bounce houses), parent store (hygiene and cleaning items), and children’s shoes. They are also set up for community services, food services (hot dogs) and a connections tent.

“Everything is free for the Guests of Honor,” said Jessica Blake, COH public relations director.

“Convoy of Hope is excited to partner with Evangel University to host a Community Event at Weller Elementary this weekend,” said Jeff Nene, COH national spokesperson.

“We look forward to seeing new and returning Evangel students help serve hundreds of Guests of Honor at the event.”

More than 100 Evangel students are also working at the Convoy of Hope warehouse, 330 S. Paterson Ave., where they are preparing 5,000 bags of groceries for a community outreach in Flint, Michigan.
