Fatal Car-Train Crash in Purdy Sparks Renewed Demand for Safer Railroad Crossing

Following a fatal crash between a car and a train at the crossroads, locals of Purdy, MO, say safety changes are coming too late.

Leaders in the town say that despite years of petitioning the Arkansas and Missouri Railroad and the Missouri Department of Transportation, there has been no effort to make the intersection safer for years.

On Wednesday, February 19th, a woman died after she attempted to cross in front of an oncoming train on the railroad crossing.

“The intersection is blocked by multiple buildings, then chain linked fence, so you pretty much have to be right in the intersection when the train is coming through,” Purdy Fire Chief Nick Mercer told KY3, ” It is a blind spot coming in the train intersection.”

The intersection has a sign showing it is a railroad crossing and bells to warn pedestrians. There are no guards or lights to show the train is coming.

MoDOT and the Missouri-Arkansas Railroad said they would install some kind of safety measure in the city over a year ago after another crash badly injured a teenager.

MoDOT says it gave the go-ahead for changes last summer, and that the Railroad was responsible for making the physical changes.
