MoDOT wants to widen I-44 from U.S. 65 to West Bypass to six lanes of traffic.
The project also includes the replacement of six bridges and a sound wall study, bringing the estimated cost to $68 million.
MoDOT submitted an application this week requesting nearly $40 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The grant through the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America federal grant would be combined with an additional $2 million provided by the City of Springfield and $1 million from the Greene County commissioners.
MoDOT’s current funding situation doesn’t allow for the project, but planners hope to know by the end of the year whether or not they were selected for the grant.
