Non-essentials that remain open are being told to close their doors or face a penalty.
Police in Springfield have received complaints about businesses such as thrift stores, movie rental stores, craft stores and more that don’t fall under the umbrella of ‘essential’.
The police chief in Springfield says 17 stores in the city have cooperated after being contacted.
If a store refuses to close, it could result in a citation, jail time, or a court injunction to cease operations.
The only exceptions are retailers like grocery stores, restaurants for take-out or delivery, gas stations, hardware stores and banks that provide goods and services for basic needs.
A business does have the option to appeal the city’s decision.
