Greene County Detectives say the two prisoners who escaped the Greene County Jail Monday night were helped by other inmates.

Authorities say a fence that Jacob Atkinson and Nathan Sneed escaped through was altered by several inmates when having recreation time.

It was the first escape from Greene County Jail in 30 years.

You can read more information on the investigation with the press release below…

As Greene County Detectives continue to look into the escape of two Greene County Inmates, we’ve learned that several inmates may have aided in the escape, and will be facing additional charges.

The inmates were out having recreation time, when they manipulated the fencing and were able to escape. Inmate Jacob Atkinson was quickly taken into custody with the assistance of SPD, however Inmate Nathan Sneed was able to get away.

Sneed was later located by GC Fugitive Apprehension Unit in the 700 block of E. Lynn, on the roof of an outbuilding, approximately a half mile from Greene County Jail. Sneed was taken into custody without further incident.

We will release updates as formal charges are filed regarding this case.

It has been 30 years since an inmate has escaped custody from Greene County Jail. On April 27, 1989, convicted armed bank robber, Larry Wayne Hankins, escaped from Greene County Jail. Hankins was located that same day and returned to custody.
