Major Changes For Springfield Mayor Tree Lighting This Year

The City of Springfield announced Wednesday the Mayor’s tree lighting, a holiday staple in the city, known to kick off the season will see multiple, major changes this year.

Cora Scott, the city’s Director of Public Information and Civic Engagement says the biggest major change is where the tree will be this upcoming season.

Instead of the traditional ceremony at Park Central Square in downtown Springfield, the lighting will be done live on top of Hotel Vandivort.

The event will also feature many performances by Springfield Little Theater, Springfield Regional Opera, Springfield Ballet, as well as performers who are from the area.

Springfield Mayor Ken McClure says continuing the tradition during the COVID-19 pandemic was important.

“It was critically important,” McClure says. “The holiday season, no matter what your faith or tradition is, is very special.”

“People need to have hope, they need to be united and celebrating the holiday season they best ways we can is critical.”

Mayor McClure is also calling on local churches to ring their bells at 7:55 p.m. on November 21 to show a sign of unity throughout the area, in which he says will show a great deal of significance.

The event will be broadcasted live on KY3.
