Missouri Officers to Take De-Escalation, Anti-Bias Training

Missouri Police Officers will be required to take annual training in de-escalation techniques and recognizing implicit bias effective January 1, 2021.

The training will be required to maintain a license and lasts about two hours. The training was approved by the Missouri Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission.

Governor Mike Parson commented on the new standards, saying, “These enhanced standards will help equip officers with relevant, up-to-date training to meet the challenges they face daily and facilitate better communication and interactions with the public.”

The mandatory training was approved on an emergency basis by Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft. Emergency rulings are temporary, but the process is expected to go through normal channels and become permanent.
