Microsoft Software Tool Made To Protect Against Cyberattack Downloaded Over 25,000 Times

A software tool made to help businesses protect themselves after a global hack of Microsoft email server software has been downloaded over 25,000 times.

The one click tool was designed to help tens of thousands of servers were affected in the cyberattack targeting Microsoft’s Exchange email program starting in January.

The White House National Security Council is describing the hack as an active threat and the initial attacks are attributed to Chinese Cyber spies targeting U. S. policy think tanks. Since then other parties have taken advantage of the vulnerability, causing an explosion of infiltrations.

The software tool should help repair some of that damage, but cannot retroactively retain compromised information.

The White House estimates that the number of vulnerable systems has fallen from over 120,000 to fewer than 10,000.

Charles Carmakal, the chief technical officer of cybersecurity firm FireEye, says Microsoft has done a lot of work helping people protect themselves.
