(KTTS News) — Nixa city council is considering asking voters for a one-percent sales tax increase to pay for more space for the police and parks departments.

Police Chief Joe Campbell says the department is out of space.

The original building was built in 1995 and added on to later.

But he says the department is running into space and safety issues.

Money from the sales tax increase would be used to hire 11 new officers.

It would also be used to build a new $13-million dollar, three-story police headquarters.

The parks department says the current community center was built in 2002 and is also running out of room.

It wants to build a new $25-million dollar building.

Parks and Rec director Matt Crouse says if they don’t, they may eventually have to turn away some kids who want to take part in sports programs.

Nixa’s population has more than doubled over the last 20 years, but it hasn’t raised its sales tax since 1987.

You can see presentations from the police and parks departments below.
