(KTTS News) — Gas prices continue to fall as we get closer to Memorial Day.

Missouri AAA says drivers in Springfield are paying an average of $3.06 gallon for unleaded gas this week, down from $3.15 gallon last week.

Press Release

The statewide gas price average in Missouri is $3.18 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Missouri Weekend Gas Watch.

That price is three cents less compared to this day last week and is 92 cents less per gallon compared to this day last year.

Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Missouri, drivers in Jefferson City are paying the most on average at $3.29 while drivers in Joplin are paying the least at $3.01 per gallon

The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.54, which is flat compared to this day last week and $1.03 less than the price per gallon at this same time last year, according to AAA Gas Prices.

The energy markets have been, in relative terms, balanced for the past week with crude oil stabilized around $70 per barrel.

Lower crude prices are continuing to help drive down pump prices in most markets despite an anticipated 37.1 million road trip travelers for the upcoming Memorial Day travel period.

Fuel prices in some areas are now more than $1.00 less per gallon than last year – a time when station prices were headed to an all-time high.

“The good news for drivers is with the Memorial Day holiday right around the corner – we are paying, on average statewide, more than a dollar less than this time last year,” said AAA spokesperson Nick Chabarria. “Now is the time to make sure your vehicle is well maintained before hitting the road to prevent unnecessary car trouble and improve your fuel economy.”

Drivers in Missouri are paying the 9th lowest gas price average in the country, according to gasprices.aaa.com.

Meanwhile, drivers in California are the paying the most at $4.79 on average for a gallon of regular unleaded.
