WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are preparing for a closely watched summit in Beijing on May 14th and 15th — talks that could shape the future of U.S.-China relations at a time of rising global tensions.

The agenda is expected to include trade disputes, technology and artificial intelligence, Taiwan security, Middle East ceasefire efforts, and China’s reported ties to Iran. The two sides are also expected to discuss agricultural purchases, Boeing sales, export controls, and cooperation on fentanyl and other narcotics.

Analysts say expectations for major breakthroughs remain low, but both nations appear focused on preventing tensions from escalating further between the world’s two largest economies.

Taiwan is expected to be one of the most sensitive topics. Beijing has reportedly signaled it wants the self-governing island to be central to the discussions. Some Taiwan supporters worry President Trump could take a more transactional approach toward U.S. backing of Taipei. Retired Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery says there are concerns Taiwan could end up “on the menu” during negotiations between Trump and Xi.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently urged the United States to “make the right choices” on Taiwan in order to maintain stability between the two countries. But Secretary of State Marco Rubio insists U.S. policy has not changed, warning that any forced change in Taiwan’s status would destabilize the region and the world.

The White House also points to continued U.S. military support for Taiwan, noting the Trump administration has approved billions of dollars in military sales and aircraft parts for the island’s defense.

Another issue expected to surface during the summit is the case of jailed Christian and Hong Kong pro-democracy publisher Jimmy Lai. Lai’s son says the family hopes President Trump can help secure the 78-year-old activist’s release from prison. Trump recently said he plans to raise the issue directly with Xi Jinping during the talks.
