(WASHINGTON) With President Trump back in Washington following his trip to Beijing, attention now turns to Iran, where tensions appear to be escalating.

In an interview with Axios, the president warned that, quote, “the clock is ticking” for Tehran. He added that unless the Iranian regime presents a stronger proposal for a deal, quote, “they are going to get hit much harder.”

Sources say Mr. Trump is expected to meet Tuesday with his top national security advisers in the Situation Room to review possible military options. According to U.S. officials, that follows a series of high-level discussions over the weekend.

The president spoke Sunday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the situation. A day earlier, he met with senior aides at his Virginia golf club, including Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, White House envoy Steve Witkoff, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are continuing. Pakistan’s interior minister traveled to Tehran over the weekend for talks with Iranian leaders. Pakistan is currently serving as the official mediator between Washington and Tehran.

In addition, the United Arab Emirates only nuclear power plant has been targeted by a drone strike.  No major damage, no radiation leaks have been reported.  And there’s been no claim of responsibility, although suspicion falls on Iran.
