Joplin Father Charged In Shooting Death Of Daughter

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri man charged in the death of his 17-year-old daughter shot her after she threw a bottle at him during an argument, police say.

Todd Mayes, 59, of Joplin, was charged Monday with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Prayer Nickelsen. No attorney is listed for him in online court records.

According to the probable-cause affidavit, Mayes was arguing with Nickelsen on the second floor of their home Sunday night when the girl threw the glass bottle.

The Joplin Globe reports that Mayes is accused of going downstairs, retrieving a 9 mm pistol from a desk drawer in his bedroom and starting back up the stairs to confront his daughter just as she was coming down.

Mayes walked back down the stairs and put the gun back in the desk drawer without ever attempting to render aid to his daughter, according to the affidavit.

The girl was rushed to a Joplin hospital in critical condition and died less than 10 hours later.
