(KTTS News) — A Nixa High School student is in trouble for making threatening comments on Friday.

The district did not say what the student said.

The district and school police are investigating, while working with local authorities.

A school spokesman says the district does not believe there is any further threat to students or the public, but there will be extra police on hand at the school on Monday.

It says it will follow normal discipline procedures and work with police to decide when or if the student should return to school.

Email statement to families:

A Nixa High School student made threatening comments today. The Nixa High School staff and our school police have been in touch with the student’s family, and, after investigating, we are taking appropriate action in consultation with local authorities.  The school will follow our normal discipline procedures and work with the local authorities to ultimately determine when or if the student returns to school. We do not believe there is any further threat to students or the public.  As a precaution, there will be additional police presence at the school on Monday.

Recent events at schools in other states have heightened everyone’s concern for the safety of students. We want to assure you that we take any threat seriously and have the full cooperation of local law enforcement. We are also working with our school counselors.

We urge you to talk to your children now and impress upon them the seriousness of threats in today’s society. Ask them to notify you or school personnel should they hear of any planned or potential disruptive or any inappropriate behavior.

At Nixa, we encourage students to speak up when they see or hear something that is not appropriate. We will continue to instill this philosophy with our students and foster positive relationships amongst each other.
