Jan 28 (Reuters) – The U.S. Marshals Service said it is investigating a possible hack of U.S. government digital-asset accounts, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing an email from the agency.

The agency said it would not comment further for now as the investigation is still ongoing, according to the report.

The Marshals Service did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The U.S. Marshals Service oversees, secures and sells cryptocurrencies seized or forfeited in federal cases, managing custody and asset disposal as part of its support for law‑enforcement operations.

The move comes as cryptocurrency hack volumes surged to $3.4 billion in 2025, according to a report from blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis.

On Monday, Patrick Witt, executive director of the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, said on X that he was “on it,” responding to a post by on-chain investigator ZachXBT, who claimed a hacker stole more than $60 million in late 2025, including funds from government seizure wallets, the report added.
