President Trump Claims Iran Deal May Be Near While Floating Seizure of Kharg Island

US President Donald Trump said the United States could soon reach a deal with Iran while also raising the possibility of seizing the country’s major fuel hub of Kharg Island.
In a speech on Sunday, President Trump said the United States is engaged in “direct and indirect” contacts with Iran and described the US position as “very good,” adding, “I think we’ll make a deal with them very soon. It may not happen, but I do see an agreement with Iran; it could happen soon.”
At the same time, he outlined potential military and economic action targeting Iranian oil infrastructure. “To be honest with you, my favorite thing is to take the oil in Iran, but some stupid people back in the US say: ‘Why are you doing that?’ But they’re stupid people,” Trump told the Financial Times on Sunday.
He added, “Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options,” and said, “It would also mean we had to be there [in Kharg Island] for a while.” When asked about Iranian defenses, Trump said, “I don’t think they have any defense. We could take it very easily.”
President Trump also wrote Sunday on Truth Social that US forces struck Iranian targets. “Big day in Iran. The targets were destroyed by our mighty military, the best and most lethal in the entire world,” he said.
US officials told the Wall Street Journal that Trump is considering a special ground operation to extract 1,000 pounds of uranium from Iran to prevent the Islamic Republic from building a nuclear weapon, though no final decision has been made as risks to troops are weighed.
The IDF said it is currently striking Iranian regime infrastructure across Tehran. Iran reported that a petrochemical facility in Tabriz was attacked overnight Sunday from the air, stating “the situation is under control and rescue forces are present at the scene,” and that “no hazardous materials were released.”
The International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran’s Khondab heavy water reactor was severely damaged and is no longer operational following an attack reported last week, adding that no nuclear material is known to be at the facility.
