2 Students Killed, 9 Wounded After Brown University Shooting

By The Media Line Staff

Two students were killed and nine others wounded when a gunman opened fire inside a classroom at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, during an exam session Saturday afternoon, triggering a campus-wide lockdown and a massive police search for the suspect.

The shooting occurred shortly after 4 p.m. local time in an academic building where students were sitting for exams. Emergency responders rushed multiple victims to nearby hospitals as police sealed off large sections of the campus and surrounding neighborhoods.

Hospital officials said several of the injured remain in serious condition. According to Rhode Island Hospital, most of those hospitalized are listed as “critical but stable,” while others sustained less severe injuries. Authorities have not released the names of the two students who were killed.

Police said the suspected shooter is a man dressed entirely in black who fled the scene on foot. Surveillance footage showing the suspect leaving the area was released as investigators expanded their search across Providence. No information has been provided regarding the suspect’s identity, motive, or current whereabouts.

At one point, officers detained an individual near the campus, but that person was later released after investigators determined there was no connection to the attack. Law enforcement officials stressed that the suspect remains at large and warned the public to remain vigilant.

A shelter-in-place order remains in effect for Brown University and nearby areas, with students instructed to stay indoors, lock doors, and avoid windows. Armed police units continue to patrol the campus and adjacent streets as part of what officials described as an ongoing and intensive manhunt.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said emergency services are fully mobilized and cautioned that the number of casualties could still change as doctors continue treating the wounded. City officials described the situation as fluid, with security measures adjusted as new information becomes available.

President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the shooting and was monitoring developments as federal authorities coordinated with local law enforcement.

As of early Sunday morning, roughly 10 hours after the attack, Brown University remained under lockdown. Police said they would provide updates as the investigation progresses and urged anyone with information about the suspect to contact authorities immediately.
